Treading foot at the Tower of London – ground protection mats

The Tower of London, is home to the Crown jewels and holds exhibitions, collections and attractions throughout the year. Recognised as one of London’s most beloved and attractive tourist destinations, the Tower as around 2.8 million visitors each year.

In 2022. the year of the Jubilee, a huge influx of visitors were welcomed through its doors. With such large numbers to visit to historic landmark, the undulating and cobbled ground required expert protection. The soil’s integrity was under question and there was a potential threat to public safety. The safest and easiest solution was to contact the experts, SafeSite Facilities, and install ground protection mats to the areas in question.

What are ground protection mats?

Ground, or floor protection mats are used when a non-slip protective surface is required on soft or sensitive ground. They can also be personalised with a company logo, corporate colours, and contact details. Lightweight yet durable, these are easy to transport and can be quickly installed by minimum personnel.

The lawns around the Tower can be damaged by large numbers of visitors. They also present a danger, with poor weather affecting the integrity and slipperiness of the ground. The cobbled stones flank the grassed areas and can be very challenging for those with low mobility, prams, wheel chairs or walking aids. A key health and safety consideration for events and attractions is for adequate protection to be installed to prevent accidents. Failure to do so would be in contravention of HSE regulations
